Home/Journal/Commercial Audio

Sound that serves the space.

For malls, showrooms and restaurants, good audio is not about making every speaker loud. It is about consistent coverage, intelligible announcements, the right atmosphere and simple control across every zone.

The commercial brief

Design coverage—not volume.

A successful system sounds even enough that customers notice the experience, not the loudspeaker nearest to them.

Commercial spaces change across the day. A showroom may need low-level music during consultation and greater energy during an event. A restaurant needs calm dining levels, clearer bar coverage and independent terrace control. A mall must connect long public areas without creating hot spots or unintelligible paging.

The work begins with a zoned plan: ceiling height, ambient noise, finishes, occupancy, operating hours, source requirements and the level expected in each area. Product selection comes after that map.

Three project types

One brand. Different acoustic jobs.

Each environment needs its own loudspeaker density, zoning and operational logic.

01 · Shopping malls

Coverage over distance.

Long corridors, atriums, food courts and entrance zones require controlled overlap and scalable amplification. The objective is consistent music and intelligible non-emergency paging without a few loud hotspots.

  • Separate public areas, food court and event zones
  • Model coverage for ceiling height and open volumes
  • Use 70V/100V distribution where the system scale supports it
  • Coordinate racks, cable routes and future tenant changes
02 · Retail showrooms

Sound as part of the brand.

A showroom needs clarity at comfortable levels. Loudspeakers should support product discovery and conversation, with premium demonstration or lounge areas treated as separate listening zones.

  • Protect speech comfort at consultation tables
  • Align grilles with lighting and ceiling geometry
  • Give event and everyday modes different presets
  • Keep staff operation simple and repeatable
03 · Restaurants & cafés

Energy without fatigue.

Dining, bar, private room, waiting area and terrace should not share one uncontrolled volume. Zoning lets the atmosphere change while voices remain comfortable.

  • Plan around ambient noise and table density
  • Separate indoor, bar and outdoor level control
  • Add discreet bass where music needs body
  • Use weather-rated models in exposed areas

System architecture

From playlist to every zone.

A commercial audio system is a chain. If zoning, amplifier headroom, cable calculation or commissioning is weak, changing the loudspeaker alone will not solve the experience.

Useful starting points

Products to discuss—not a substitute for design.

The final model and quantity must follow a coverage study, load calculation, reflected ceiling plan and operating brief.

Restaurants with outdoor seating

The terrace is a separate acoustic room.

Outdoor sound dissipates quickly and competes with traffic, conversation and neighbouring properties. A small number of loud speakers usually creates uneven levels; more carefully spaced sources can provide comfortable coverage with less spill.

Exposure
Choose weather-rated products for the real mounting condition, including rain, dust, heat and cleaning.
Boundaries
Aim sound toward customers and away from neighbouring façades, residences and open site edges.
Zoning
Keep terrace and indoor dining levels independent, with appropriate limits and scheduled presets.
Bass
Use purpose-designed outdoor low-frequency support when the brief requires full-range music.

Operational scenes

Give staff simple choices.

Good control exposes useful presets while protecting the engineering underneath.

Opening

Quiet arrival

Low background level in all public zones with terrace held off until service begins.

Trading

Balanced daytime

Consistent brand soundtrack with separate limits for consultation, dining and circulation.

Event

Focused energy

Higher permitted level in selected zones without forcing every area to follow.

Closing

Automatic reset

Scheduled reduction and a known start state for the next operating day.

Consultant checklist

Resolve the system before tender.

For projects in Pune and across India, a clear tender package reduces substitutions, site conflicts and commissioning surprises.

Planning questions

Before the ceiling is frozen.

Should a mall use 8-ohm or 70V/100V loudspeakers?

Large sites with many loudspeakers and long cable runs commonly benefit from a correctly engineered 70V/100V system. Smaller premium zones may use low-impedance speakers. Zoning, cable distance, quantity, target level and amplifier design determine the choice.

Can one music system cover a restaurant and its terrace?

They can share sources and control, but dining, bar, private room and terrace areas should normally be separate zones. Indoor and weather-exposed areas also require different loudspeaker construction and independent level control.

When should commercial audio be coordinated?

Before ceiling and electrical drawings are frozen. Coverage must be coordinated with lighting, HVAC, sprinklers, signage, structure, access panels, cable routes, rack ventilation and the interior finish.
