In a confab with Manasi Jade, AHL unfolds lock, stock and barrel about lighting.
“There is a myriad of light types when it comes to planning a home. If I were to classify the mainstream ones –
While this topic is deep, I would elucidate on technical and decorative lighting on being the key elements. The decorative lighting should be ambient and the technical lights should tranquilly spread across rooms giving ample brightness. Mood lighting is desirable in bedrooms for a dreamy ambience and table lamps and stand-alone elements would be an excellent choice to achieve this. The kitchen requires maximum daylight and decorative lights are avertible owing to maintenance. For a luxurious experience, you can integrate modern techniques of automation, dimming, and temperature control.
Designing lights for a home is quite contradistinctive to designing interior lights for an office right from the aesthetics to the color temperature of lights. Upholding style and taste the home lighting can range from 2700 to 6000 kelvin as opposed to office lighting where 6000 to 6500 kelvin is imperative to maintain daylight or white light. Jade design house has sure taken the house of jade interiors design sector by storm with its innovative range of lighting designs.

Interior Design as a profession is not something Akshi had to choose as a career option when she grew. She had an innate passion for interior decoration ever since she was a little girl and the joy of decorating spaces was convincing enough that Interior Designing was her ideal career path.
Classic Kirchen Space
A good interior designer can take their interior design inspiration from anything aroud them. Akshi derives her design inspiration from the simplest of things she observes in her circadian life. And simple could be as elementary as a stapler. Yes! you heard it right. Most of the time, inspiratin for designers come from very simplest of things. Eventually, the designs that she creates are for the client. It is a space they live or work in and it needs to reflect their mind. “My designs portray stories that people tell”, expresses Akshi.
Dining Space with Greek Vibes
She cherishes this contemporary themed residential space which is one of her favorites . “I had free rein over this space as the owners had given me complete freedom on my design. This home was like my canvas, I could play my mind and eventually, it reflects my flair for style and design in its true sense”.
Well stylized Console
“Minimalism is not a lack of something, It’s simply the perfect amount of something”, said Nicholas Burroughs. And Akshi genuinely believes in this, and put this into action in her modern interior design!
Minimalist Design Space
“I like to design spaces that are uncluttered and give its inmates the space to breathe, which I conceive is imperative in today’s chaotic world”. Akshi keeps in mind the concept of minimalism and will enchant you with her timeless aesthetics modern design.

Vandana’s professional stints at reputed firms Jonathan Baron (New York, USA) and Casa Paradox, (Delhi, India) are key to ameliorate her designing skills. Passion for design has been genealogical for Vandana. Spiritual at heart, she follows Buddhism and has been practicing this philosophy since 2017 she devotes an hour or two each day for chanting and reading. She is a foodie and loves to travel and savor new experiences.
Aesthetic Foyer Area
Here is a peek into Vandana’s Design journey that began in 2012.
The potential inspiration lay in my childhood, seeing my father’s passion for building and constructing residences. Architectural plans and frequent site visits have been an integral part of my childhood. This experience led me to further explore the field of interior design. Within a few months of my studies, I was convinced that Interior Design was my Career calling and being a interior designer was my destiny. The freedom of creating something, drawing your thoughts on paper, and executing the same to make it a reality was euphoric.
Blend of Contemporary & Classic
We head for Modern and Eclectic Design for our inspiration and blend in different interior ideas to beget unique and serene interiors that elevate the meaning of Luxury.
Royal Living Area
I strongly believe that my appreciation for the rich Indian culture along with my international experience reflects in the interior design styles and in the design creations of Moi Den Interiors which are a perfect amalgamation of east and west. Moi Den creates a home of experiences with glamorous and timeless designs.
Traditional Living Room
My personal favorite has been one of my introductory projects – Unitech World Spa, Gurgaon which was developed in 2012. My team worked whole heartedly on the interior designs of the this project from concept to creation. The space planning, ceiling design, bathroom drawings, and manufacturing of the furniture in our factory, every intricate detail was addressed exquisitely.
Luxury Living Space
My job is to convert a client’s dream into reality. Analogous to a good Retailer, I anticipate the needs of my client and spend a lot of time and energy understanding their lifestyle and habits.
Traditional Luxury Villa

An art, fashion, and Design Enthusiast. Sonal Bhatia’s prime focus is to create tailor-made spaces that resonate with the client’s personality which she integrates with her ideas and lookbook. Sonal adds that her frame of mind plays an integral role in the design process. She is currently intrigued by Emerald Green and has done one of her projects in Emerald Green and Grey. White is her all-time favorite and she confesses using a characteristic white marble in just about every project she designs.
Balancing Prints and Patterns
In cities like Mumbai utilizing minimum space to attain maximum functionality is paramount. Sonam vouches on massing and giving a unanimous look to the space in consideration. Giving a single color finish to the entire room will help enlarge the space and lend height too. But, things are a bit different when you are styling homes in Delhi where you have a lot of spaciousness. Your styling can be a bit more bold and dramatic.
Simple & Stylish
Evergreen spaces are winsome, and this is achieved through flexibility in design. She suggests the use of sturdy furniture and subtle walls that you can easily experiment with. White is the most beautiful canvas, and it is always versatile to style. It gives you numerous options to design during festivities. To add opulence and bling she suggests using quirky cushions and accessories. Look for longevity in design and create eternal interiors.
Swanky Glass House Design with Naturally Lit interiors
Sonal derives her inspiration from the look of a home, it’s planning and layout. Her primary focus has always been natural light. Allowing natural light and biophilia to enter rooms is necessitous as it is the key to peace and harmony. Blocking or masking of windows is a strict NO!
A beautiful bath area with a classy entrance
Lockdown had its own restrictions and collecting new accessories was way out. Sonal created this cute Dining wall with everyday things that she possessed in her kitchen. Check this one out for a quick dose of styling.

Creating Quirky Installations using Vintage Materials – Play of Light with Natural Textured Materials
Freedom of design and the love of imagination and inventiveness which we would simply term creativity have been their biggest inspiration on culling Architecture as a career choice. Most of the characteristics of a Designer are simply inborn and similar is the case with Samarth and Nikhar who have been utilizing these innate aspects. They have been fulfilling their desire of blending creativity and functionality in design. Architecture, they believe, is a profession that grants you the flexibility to think out of the box. The challenge of being innovative and conceptualizing ideas to bring a project to life, that serves the purpose, excites them as Designers.
Now, the conceptualization of ideas and style is usually determined by the clients’ style of living. And then comes the approach of the Architect.
Using old styled products with a Modern Approach
The firm believes in the fact that they don’t simply design houses. They design lifestyles that the clients can associate with, and cherish living in each day.
In the process of designing commercial property, the firm tries to focus on the customers that these places want to attract. To draw the attention of customers, engaging them, giving a feeling of comfort, and providing them an experience that would bring them back to the place is what Archirior India focuses on.
When small Details come together to form a Big Picture
The excitement of delivering each project comes with its own set of challenges. The firm stands by a simple motto: ask questions and listen carefully. Listening is an intrinsic key. They home in on trying to understand the needs, desires, and wants of each client. This helps to impactfully use architecture to design and address each of their aspirations.
Getting together the 3 Basic Raw Materials – Metal, Brick & Wood
We ask the duo about their favorite assignments. Admitting of comparison with the kind of projects they do, they love working on all types of residential, commercial, retail, and hospitality projects. The projects that remain close to their heart are the hospitality ones that got them great acknowledgment and appreciation. The project in the picture above is one of our initial assignment. The work is of great detailing and gained appreciation not just by the client but also by the crowd who was experiencing it.
The Perspective
Executing vintage styles in a modern way is a design trend that’s prevailing says the team. Using retro furniture and giving it a wholly modern look or using old techniques of crafting with a contemporary approach has been the firm’s current favourite trend. Similarly, using raw material by itself without layering they believe, is an evergreen trend.

A modern Living Room styled by Jasmine Jhaveri
Jasmine’s personal favorite among Interior trends is the usage of wallpapers and sometimes she loves going bold by giving a dramatic look to the room being styled. She reveals that the current market trend in interior styling is soulful minimalism and making the most of large curvy bulbous furniture, especially sofas and armchairs. Which happens to be her own favorite too.
Another Living Room Design
Jasmine theorizes the key things you should identify before styling your room.
At first, assess what you can retain and what you can shove off the room. Take stock of other rooms to look at furniture that you currently possess. If you can blend one of the pieces into the room in question then it may work wonders, offering a perfect design solution.
Secondly, Creating a visual balance in the room is essential. You can harmonize the look using furniture, colours, or some design element. It is also imperative to identify a focal point in the room which anchors the entire space. Too many elements can cause distraction and visual noise.
Jasmine’s favorite space at home.
This beautiful bedroom is Jasmine’s favorite space at her abode.
“For the longest time, I wasn’t getting the ‘right’ wallpaper behind my bed back. I decided to have this gorgeous hand-painted wall with large peonies, off-centered against a dark plum background. I was very very picky for the right shade!”, says Jasmine
Bed Linen Complimenting the Art
Larger than Life Peonies
The rich boudoir feel with complimenting bedlinen bestow a charming look to the room. The bed with its statement wall is the focal point here. The flowers emit a Sense of femininity while the larger than life bold flowers here set against a deep. While the larger than life bold flowers set against a deep background lend a touch of royalty.
Styling done Right!
We asked Jasmine to advice our readers on styling their own homes and here’s what the ingenious stylist has to say:
“One must answer a few vital questions before they begin styling their homes:
Chic Styling of Center Table and Sofa
Once you agree upon the look and feel, always start by layering the space. You need to understand that large pieces of furniture, wall colours and drapes are there to stay so choose the colours for them wisely – neutral is advisable.
A Contemporary Styled Bedroom
Then add key elements like art, carpets, an accent piece. You can now include a statement chair in a pop of color and then add your accessories. Mirrors, throw cushions, candles, vases, coffee table, books, and Other decorative items can be introduced later.
It’s nice to start easy and then dive into the details. Don’t get too excited as adding too many ‘spices’ at the beginning may not yield great results.
Coffee Table Styling
Last but not the least, draw your inspirations from Pinterest and Instagram. But eventually, ensure that the home reflects your essence and what YOU like!
Design is not an event. It’s to be celebrated and lived everyday, so enjoy the journey”, expresses the graceful Interior Stylist.

“Design should do the same thing in everyday life that art does when encountered: amaze us, scare us or delight us, but certainly open us to new worlds within our daily existence.”– Aaron Betsky
We get our inspiration from existing buildings, paintings, sculptures, and other art forms that we encounter on a day to day basis. The crux of being greatly inspired lies in the details of the creativity around us. Every new design idea is an inspiration for us, be it a product, an art, or a building. As an architecture, planning & interior design firm, we also adore the works of famous Architects, SANAA, Geoffrey Bawa, Laurie Baker, and many more.
An aesthetically designed Co-working Space
Our style evolves with each project we encounter. We believe more in versatility, and experimenting if the project allows.
Meeting Room at Office
Currently, we are working on Private Residences in Delhi, Farmhouses & Pool House in Gurugram, hospitality & banquet in Punjab, and a few other commercial projects. When we talk about challenges – sometimes the drawings made are minimalistic, and decisions are made straight on-site, and coordination with vendors while working on live sites becomes overwhelming. We usually work with the flow as client involvement is a part of our design process. But, synchronizing the choices and taste of clients with the overall environment of the house without materializing it on paper or screen is another challenge in itself.

The working style has taken a new shape during COVID times, with the concept of work from home coming into the picture. Yes! like most other professions we miss physical interactions and physical surroundings. But optimistically this is leading us as designers to yet another frame of mind which will reflect in our buildings in some way.
While every project holds its own speciality, a few of our recent completions hold a special place:

]]>Interiors by Obaid Hussain Khan
He owes his great designing skills to the inspiration and teachings acquired from his father & Grandfather who is akin to the family of Nawab’s & Jagirdar’s (Landlords). They had a prodigious understanding of design and execution, their work was commendable. Here is a list of some of the prestigious projects they have worked on – The High Court of A.P, Raj Bhavan, TS Assembly House, Chiran Palace, ICRISAT, HMT, ACC Cement, State Bank of Hyderabad, Race Course, Iranian consulate, Fateh maidan Club, Nizam Club, Prabhat Theatre and Andhra University (all of which are located in Andhra/Telangana)
Besides travelling, he loves reading and cooking. And quite appreciates the company of good honest people around him. “I like to stay true to my work & my word. I dislike dishonest and unethical behaviour, can’t stand negative people specially at work”, says the young Hyderabadi designer.
Here are some thoughts the he has shared with us.
Entrance of a Restaurant
My inspiration comes from many places and many styles of work, Classical, Neo-Classical, Contemporary, Modern, and Minimal designs I work with them all. I believe design should be timeless and should survive the sloth of fast-changing times. I adopt a fusion style of work, keeping in mind that you have to be very careful and precise while at it.
My style of designing is very versatile, it depends on the type of project I am working on, and the requirements of my client. My work spectrum includes both commercial and Residential. I have done retail outlets, Hotels, Restaurants, Office spaces, Hospitals, Residential Projects, and Farmhouses.
An Interior of a Restaurant
I do all my projects with a lot of passion, they are all special to me in their own ways. For instance the designing and execution of MeBaz, Manyavar, and Jahapanah group. Another happens to be a doctors house where I was asked to incorporate lots of trophies including a giraffe and a lion.
A Residential Project
My recent favorite has been a project that I worked on for a group of friends who wanted to start a Restaurant/Pub. This was a challenging deliverable as there were ideas pouring in from four of them. “The Scam” as the Restaurant was named was an absolute delight at the end.
The Scam restaurant
Keeping the client’s comfort and taste in mind is of utmost importance. As every individual loves to see the house of his dreams. So I improvise and give my clients a worthier version of their own concept. Sometimes the demands change during the course of work and modifying at such times is a bit of a challenge. But handing over a complete project and seeing happy clients is tremendously rewarding.
A Swimming Pool Designed for a Client
Here is something Obaid Hussain Khan wishes to share with people designing their homes: “Rome was not built in a day, So take time in building your dream house. Invest patience and take professional help for great results”.
]]>A bright Kids Room designed by Ruchika & Shaily Malpani
From Conceptualizing and Designing Events to designing kids’ jewelry and Interior Designing, Ruchika has unraveled her creativity in a mixed bag. Here is how the lovely designer whiles away her time and keeps herself motivated. “I love reading, whenever time permits. Listening to soft jazz after a long days work lifts my mood. I love travelling and just cant wait to travel once the pandemic ends. All of us at home are water babies, and my husband and I are certified open waters divers. I am a huge movie buff.”
Styling a Wedding Event
They say the seeds for what you are today have been sowed in your childhood. My earliest memory of having anything to do with interior design is rearranging my bedroom furniture every few months to give my room a fresh feel. I remember pestering my mom to do the same with our living room. Seeing spaces from a different perspective and wanting to optimize every space that I saw is something that I have always Loved. I did my Designing course after I got married, and Aced it. Being the institute topper, I got offered a designing job immediately with a big company. But Life had other things planned for me, so I ended up doing my first project, an office of about 50 employees in banjara hills. I have not looked back since.
A beautiful kids bedroom in pastel hues
Travelling is the best teacher. There is so much to grasp when you are in new cities and countries. For me, Inspiration is in a places’ architecture, culture, people, lifestyle and even traditions. I have a few mentors who I look upto for my inspiration as well.
A London themed Kids Room
My personal favorite is a project that is currently in progress. It is a 3600sft Apartment and we got it as a bare shell. We have been able to design to our hearts content for this. We are working with a lot of quirky colors, latest trends, and local artists in this project.
This room looks pretty in its soft shades
The most important quality of a designed house is that the owners see it as a true “home”. It should reflect them, their ideas and their interests in the most beautiful and functional way possible. Furnishings, colors, motifs, art and accessories should mix perfectly with their surroundings, finding a rhythm to accompany the personal taste of the owners.
The pretty bed and storage designed for a girls bedroom
I feel this is one of the best times to be an interior designer, because of the fluidity of the current trend. There are no hard and fast rules and colors are being used boisterously! Whether on furniture or walls, colors are the cheapest and most effective way to add an instant pop to your space. Fluted glass and wood are being used extensively. Arches have made a comeback. Arches add a sense of drama to a room. Wooden paneling has gone modern as well in Clean straight lines.
Another thing that instantly changes your space and gives it a fresh feel is indoor plants. They come in all sizes, and place them on your side table or hang them from your ceiling. It adds the chutzpah. Designers all over the world have started working with artisans and materials local to them, and this is true in India as well. Especially since the pandemic has set in, there is more opportunity to explore the immense talent at home. Rattan has been a part of Indian homes for ages, and it has come back to stay this time.
Furniture makers whether from Delhi, Jaipur or even Hyderabad are getting an opportunity to showcase their craftsmanship. Lights have gone sleeker. The new mantra for lights is – Less is More.
Ending on a positive note the designer says “At the cost of sounding cliched, I dislike dishonesty and detest manipulation. I have lived by the principle of Live and Let Live, and all the current controversies, situations whether political or otherwise have exposed a mean, dirty side of people. Staying positive and content is the need of the hour.” So true, Ruchika.
