Her creative work of aesthetically designed residences and commercial spaces are concentrated all over the US. A member of the prestigious American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), she actualized her goal by concluding her studies with an MS in Interior Architecture and Design at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Swati strongly believes in attaining a sense of joy by giving back to the community. She donates her time to several nonprofit organizations and also volunteers to serve at charities.

Grace’s House by Swati GoorhaAHL Lounge meets this designer with a creative vision to unleash her thoughts on everything style and design.

Interior Designing as a Career Choice

Architecture, color, art, and the environment intrigues Swati profoundly. Observing these elements at historical cities and sites while traveling with her parents would fascinate her as a child. This fascination soon transformed into a career choice as she grew older. The verity that interior design utilizes these aspects to create a space that affects the inhabitants inspired Swati to become a designer.

Swati treasures becoming a part of her client’s lives while understanding their lifestyle and personality to conceptualize and create their space. “Each client has an individualistic style, and I respect that,” says Swati Goorha. The lessons she learns from each client are unique and give her a new perspective on building homes that suit the client’s personality and style.

Swati’s Design Inspiration

Extensive traveling is Swati’s greatest inspiration for her designs. As being a traveller she travels across 2-3 countries each year to explore art. “The more I travel, the more I learn, and the more I expand my perspective. The vernacular nuances in architecture and adaptation to local climate, culture, and geographical needs move me deeply. Be it an abode built of brick and mud in Morocco or the awe-inspiring Palace of Versailles in France, their functionality equally intrigues me”, expresses Swati.

Classic Green Kitchen

Travel being an integral part of her life, Swati finds herself inculcating the historical information that attracts her in the most utilitarian and straightforward form in the modern homes she designs.

A Favorite Project

“Picking a favorite project is like picking a favorite child. You love all your children equally”, connotes Swati.

Bar Area with Eclectic Seating options

Swati meticulously makes her project choices. “The clients approaching Swati Goorha Designs firm are aware of our strengths and work style, and we take ample time to understand their requirements,” she says. This collaboration with their client helps them deliver timeless styles. Swati ensures that No design elements are repeated or replicated, and each of her creations is unique and spell individualistic style most aesthetically.

Key Aspects in Designing a Home

“I like to create design narratives that tell the story of the people who live in the house,” says Swati Goorha. Some of the key considerations she mentions are the architecture and location of the building. The site also informs the design. “Mid-century modern interiors cannot be set in a Victorian house that would be incongruous,” asserts Swati.

Natural Sunlight in Dining Room

Utilizing Natural Light effectively

Natural light is one of the most critical aspects of producing professional-looking work. However, determining which light fixtures will provide you with the results you require within your workflow might be tricky. And Swati Goorha has a good hand in utilizing natural light efffectively. Each City and Country has its nuances based on climate, vernacular architecture, and distinct style and energy. These aspects are also taken into consideration while designing a house.

But as emphasized earlier, the most important aspect of design remains to be its inhabitants. The requirements of owners play an essential role as designing a home for singles or young couples is very different from designing a home for people with young children or empty nesters. We design for our clients, and we create a space where they can create beautiful memories and call home.

Current Trends in Interior Design

“We, as a firm, do not believe in following trends; good design is timeless. If you observe spaces created by designers like Alberto Pinto, Henry Samuel, Adolf Loos, they are still pertinent and eclectic although they were created ages ago”.

Design Advice for AHL Readers

“Invest time to adorn your space. Your home should always be a work in progress and change with you as you go on the journey of life. Nothing is constant. Your needs change, your taste changes, and your home should also change with you. Small-scale efforts like changing the wall color, adding new art, changing window treatments can add a lot of personality to your space”.

Swati genuinely believes that people should surround themselves with things they love and things that tell a story. Objects that you pick during travels, your grandfather’s antiques, or something truly unique. These objects will narrate stories each time you look at them.

Kitchen & Island Room

Kitchen with Island

Swati does not believe in matching items and sets of furniture. “You don’t want your home to look like you stepped into a store and bought the products home,” says Swati. Spaces should be eclectic and curated. Furniture should be inviting and comfortable. Swati advises on selecting pieces, not just for their aesthetic appeal but also their practical use.

Swati insists on having fun and enjoying the experience of building your homes. Proceed leisurely and build your nest one straw at a time.

Nature is her greatest inspiration for designing. And she feels that your space should bestow you with the same exhilarating experience that the natural environment would. On that account, she ensures the presence of natural light and ventilation in the spaces she creates. “By putting Biophilia into effect you invite a fine transition from outside to the inside and vice-versa”, expresses Sailakshmi. Transition from Outdoor to Indoor

What obstacles & challenges do you face while designing?

“There are multifarious challenges that you face and overcome during the design phase. In one of our projects where the challenge was minimal natural light we
looked at ways and materials to enhance and bring in more natural light.
Another common challenge that a designer faces is contrasting choices and ideas of inmates. In our recent apartment project, the man was a vintage lover and the woman wanted a contemporary aesthetic. While it was quite a challenge to accomplish a middle ground we were in awe of the outcome which was a perfect juxtaposition of old and new. I would admit that these challenges help in our growth and learning tremendously”.

What are the latest trends in Interior Design and Architecture?

“I’m not a follower of trends and believe that a design is definitive to the individual space or context. And every creation is a blend of client requirements and the design sensibilities of the architect or interior designer. Designs should be evergreen and stand the test of time”, advises Sailakshmi of SLA.

In the class of Mumbais ace Designers, Essajees deal in Antiques, Art, Bespoke Flooring, High End Furniture and collectibles.

Aesthetic Office Space

Essajees Atelier is an offshoot of Essajees found in 2014 by Sarah Sham. Being part of a family that has been in the interior decoration business for over a century, did Sarah always dream of being an interior designer?

“Not in the least”, smiles Sarah. Sarah always wanted to fly with her own wings. She had a shot at Psychology, she studied finance at Stern University in New York and went on to work as a News Anchor for Bloomberg. She got wised up to the career path of interior designing during her 5-year stint at Essajees, where she not only stockpiled experience in furniture manufacturing and production but also developed a keen interest and love for designing.

Simple yet Stylish Lounge Area

Here is our heart-to-heart conversation with the Charismatic and humble Designer

Who has been your greatest inspiration in the Design Industry?

My inspiration has not been any Designer in particular but I admire a lot of Businesswomen. One of them is the founder of Saffronart – where I interned in 2005 at the initial stage of my career. I extol Minal Vazirani for her aesthetic vision and revolutionizing the way Indians view art. And about her designs, she take her design inspiration from almost everywhere and from everything that catches her attention.

Sarah’s favorite work is her parents Abode

Of the numerous projects that Essajees Atelier has worked on which one do you treasure?

I must admit it is my parents’ home that I went on to design premarriage. Being a family project, executing this one had its own set of challenges, becasue I wanted to decorate the house with the modern interior desing. But the end result was totally worth it. It is not just the design or the love that went into conceptualizing the design, but the fact that I can take joy in my own creation time and again which doesn’t usually happen, as once a client’s work is complete we never get to visit it again. I frequent my parent’s place and truly relish the experience of home decor.

Naturally Lit Living Space

What are the key things you consider at the outset of your design process?

The primary aspect for me is the context of the space being designed. Location of the area, the direction of sunlight, and the entire design sphere in consideration. By and by it is the brief of the client. It is their space, so their style and choice ought to reflect in their space. Amidst the context and client brief, is where our design ideas spring.

Beautiful Outset Design 2 Beautiful Outset Design 1

What is your individual style when it comes to interiors?

My style is contemporary. I like the blend of traditional and modern design. I love colors and design! Well-nigh everyone feels that colors start to get monotonous with time but that is not true at my end. Colors boost the energy of a room and bring in great vibes. In fact, I have the impression that too much white in a room makes it dull and boring. And most certainly I would prefer a vibrant room to a blank dull space.

Biophilic Living Space Comfy Sofas

I’m a crazy Biophilic fan. I love surrounding myself with greenery and you will find my little abode filled with plenty of plants in every nook and corner.

Inviting Appeal with Pastel Hues

What projects is your team working on currently and what is your future vision for Essajees Atelier?

The team is working on multiple projects at present. We have 3 projects in Goa, 4 High end residences in Kolkata, a 3-storey residence at Hyderabad and other commercial and residential spaces are also in the pipeline.

When it comes to the future vision for my firm, I am not too big a dreamer. My aim is not to expand extensively but to focus on super-specialized projects. Great design element and projects that are beyond imagination is my vision de facto.

5 years ago, my goal was to build a team of 10. It is the 6th year and I have achieved my goal. If you ask me 5 years down the line then I aspire to increase my strength twofold. I would like to limit my expansion to that and focus on my design in its entirety.

Beautifully Distressed Interiors

How do you maintain a work-life balance?

While I have help at home to manage my kid, I give no credence to micromanagement. Neither at home nor at the office. I place confidence in my team and strongly believe that each member knows his responsibilities. The accomplishment of assigned tasks is all that matters at Essajees Atelier. Apart from that, I end my workday at 7 (which includes not attending work calls) and I also make sure my weekends are work free.

An Elegant Dining Area

What advice would you like to give to AHL readers?

The best advice I would say is No Advice. It is your space and it should reflect your own style! Glam up your space with things and colors you truly love. Like they say, “Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder”. What is unattractive for you might be appealing to me and vice versa. So simply decorate by your choices.

Bedroom Decor Design 2 Bedroom Decor Design 1

Had it not been for interior designing, you would find Sarah Sham cooking some delicious meals as she loves the role of a chef. I find the art of baking and icing the cakes extremely satiating she expresses. An ardent fan of MasterChef, this foodie is on the hunt for the best restaurants in every place of her travel.

Prior to crossing paths, each of them had an inherent penchant for design. The influence that physiognomy of a home has on one’s quality of life inspired them. Working for renowned studios and design publications across the country for over 10 years has given them immense knowledge and experience. This experience has been beneficial in their consociation for Quirk Studio.

They attribute their success to their passion for design and impacting people’s lives with their work. There has been no looking back for this duo ever since the start of their design journey.

Artsy Office Setup

Apart from the love for design what spurred your decision of interior designing as a career?

  • Disha: I grew up watching my aunt who belonged to the sphere of Interior Design. The creativity and work were so inspiring that it got engraved into my thought process to opt for designing as a career. Thence I pursued my Graduation and Masters in the field of Interior Design and Design Management Respectively.
  • Shivani: I believe that the realm of interior design came to me as a ‘disguised opportunity’ of sorts. Back in 2004, I had the window of opportunity to design a space as a media student. There has been no turning back since! I have also had the privilege to work with industry connoisseurs and went forward to acquire my Master’s in interior design.

Well Lit Office Space

From where do you draw inspiration for your designs?

Inspiration is truly an unrestricted concept for the girls. It does not just manifest in one’s day-to-day life but is also derived from places where you would least expect to find it, they say.

“Our cardinal source of inspiration is the surrounding space and environment, our travel experiences, and the study of art across disciplines”. In the process of designing, the client’s persona and sentimentality also develop into inspiration.

The secret they believe is to remain curious and hungry to evolve – “it always does bring us closer to things that motivate us creatively”!

Tell us about a project that has been close to your heart

Each project at Quirk Studio is a craft of passion, panache, and a keen eye for detail. Nevertheless, ‘House No.12’ is a project that has played a vital role in our journey as designers. A project that has been emblematic of our expertise. The home evokes a sense of exuberance, color, and eclecticism through elements like art, accessories, accent furniture, and curated lights.

Classic, Contemporary, and Modern Blend

Pic Courtesy: Studio Kunal Bhatia

The design brief was to create a home that suits a young couple in their early 30’s with a toddler. And, the aim was to create a space that was aesthetically classic, contemporary, and modern. Catering to the design brief and working in tandem with the client’s objectives House No. 12 is an idyllic residence amidst the bustle that surrounds Mumbai.

We visualize this project as the creation of a sanctuary for a young family embarking on their new journey!

Classy Living Area

While designing a house what are the things you take under advisement?

Being an end user’s oasis every residential project has to consider the functional, emotional, and spatial needs of its inmates. It is going to be the space they will inhabit for years to come. It is imperative to understand the client’s brief and personality at a deep-rooted level! Residential spaces designed at Quirk Studio are user-centric; they place great emphasis on spatial planning and circulation. We envision homes to meet every need and be a safe haven for our clients.

Prints and Patterns with Wallpaper

What are your thoughts on the current design trends?

Here are some of our favorite design trends that we believe have the inherent capability to add character to one’s space!

  • Concrete: As a material, you can use concrete in a plethora of forms. With its array of finishes, it evokes a sense of minimalism and rawness. This makes it a key material in most design palettes!
  • Mixing Metals: Making a cameo sporadically, the trend of mixing metals is truly an eclectic practice that complements a space regardless of its genre. A traditional or contemporary space can celebrate the blending of various metals through accessorization, styling, or statement pieces.

Indoor plants placed aesthetically

Blurring Boundaries between Indoors and Outdoors: This is a timeless trend that we can vouch for! Biophilia certainly elevates and invigorates every space. Opening spaces into green spots like yards, balconies, or terraces adds to great appeal. Bringing the outdoors in, with a healthy dose of indoor plants is the quickest and most pocket-friendly makeover.

Subtle Hues giving a Grand Appeal

Aside from creating artful spaces the pretty ladies invest time nurturing various hobbies that keep them mentally stimulated!

For Shivani Ajmera it is revelling in the brilliance of Theatre and Music. For Disha Bhavsar it has got to be travelling and pursuing fitness!

Named after its Creative Designer Sonal Bhatia who established this venture in 1998. Her finesse and expertise in design roll in with an experience of over 23 years in the field of design. She owes her skills of planning, space utilization, and site management to the firm she began her career with – Talati &Panthaky.

Beautiful Printed Wallpaper

An art, fashion, and Design Enthusiast. Sonal Bhatia’s prime focus is to create tailor-made spaces that resonate with the client’s personality which she integrates with her ideas and lookbook. Sonal adds that her frame of mind plays an integral role in the design process. She is currently intrigued by Emerald Green and has done one of her projects in Emerald Green and Grey. White is her all-time favorite and she confesses using a characteristic white marble in just about every project she designs.

Balancing Prints and Patterns

In cities like Mumbai utilizing minimum space to attain maximum functionality is paramount. Sonam vouches on massing and giving a unanimous look to the space in consideration. Giving a single color finish to the entire room will help enlarge the space and lend height too. But, things are a bit different when you are styling homes in Delhi where you have a lot of spaciousness. Your styling can be a bit more bold and dramatic.

Simple & Stylish

Evergreen spaces are winsome, and this is achieved through flexibility in design. She suggests the use of sturdy furniture and subtle walls that you can easily experiment with. White is the most beautiful canvas, and it is always versatile to style. It gives you numerous options to design during festivities. To add opulence and bling she suggests using quirky cushions and accessories. Look for longevity in design and create eternal interiors.

Swanky Glass House Design with Naturally Lit interiors

Sonal derives her inspiration from the look of a home, it’s planning and layout. Her primary focus has always been natural light. Allowing natural light and biophilia to enter rooms is necessitous as it is the key to peace and harmony. Blocking or masking of windows is a strict NO!

A beautiful bath area with a classy entrance

Lockdown had its own restrictions and collecting new accessories was way out. Sonal created this cute Dining wall with everyday things that she possessed in her kitchen. Check this one out for a quick dose of styling.

Harmonizing aesthetics with functionality is indispensable and it truly reflects in their projects. According to the Founder Sonal Bhatia, “Design impacts all our lives, in ways subtle and overt. From our phones to our coffee pots. every object is a function of design, which is more than just good aesthetics. It is also about how we use a product or design”.

Samarth Agarwal and Ar. Nikhar Jhawer established Mumbai’s Design Firm Archirior India in 2017. The budding Brother-Sister Duo owe their immense knowledge and art of teamwork to their experience working with multifarious Design firms.

Creating Quirky Installations using Vintage Materials – Play of Light with Natural Textured Materials

Freedom of design and the love of imagination and inventiveness which we would simply term creativity have been their biggest inspiration on culling Architecture as a career choice. Most of the characteristics of a Designer are simply inborn and similar is the case with Samarth and Nikhar who have been utilizing these innate aspects. They have been fulfilling their desire of blending creativity and functionality in design. Architecture, they believe, is a profession that grants you the flexibility to think out of the box. The challenge of being innovative and conceptualizing ideas to bring a project to life, that serves the purpose, excites them as Designers.

Now, the conceptualization of ideas and style is usually determined by the clients’ style of living. And then comes the approach of the Architect.

Using old styled products with a Modern Approach

Archirior India’s Work Style & Principle

The firm believes in the fact that they don’t simply design houses. They design lifestyles that the clients can associate with, and cherish living in each day.

In the process of designing commercial property, the firm tries to focus on the customers that these places want to attract. To draw the attention of customers, engaging them, giving a feeling of comfort, and providing them an experience that would bring them back to the place is what Archirior India focuses on.

When small Details come together to form a Big Picture

The excitement of delivering each project comes with its own set of challenges. The firm stands by a simple motto: ask questions and listen carefully. Listening is an intrinsic key. They home in on trying to understand the needs, desires, and wants of each client. This helps to impactfully use architecture to design and address each of their aspirations.

Getting together the 3 Basic Raw Materials – Metal, Brick & Wood

Favorite Project

We ask the duo about their favorite assignments. Admitting of comparison with the kind of projects they do, they love working on all types of residential, commercial, retail, and hospitality projects. The projects that remain close to their heart are the hospitality ones that got them great acknowledgment and appreciation. The project in the picture above is one of our initial assignment. The work is of great detailing and gained appreciation not just by the client but also by the crowd who was experiencing it.

The Perspective

Design Trends

Executing vintage styles in a modern way is a design trend that’s prevailing says the team. Using retro furniture and giving it a wholly modern look or using old techniques of crafting with a contemporary approach has been the firm’s current favourite trend. Similarly, using raw material by itself without layering they believe, is an evergreen trend.
